It happens every day. You are going along just fine, and then you crash. You suddenly have no motivation to do anything and you just want to take a nap. Since that (usually) isn’t an option, you turn to energy drinks, sugar, or coffee to keep you moving. But there is a better way, and it doesn’t involve any chemicals or stimulants.
Do Jumping Jacks
Or run in place, or sprint up the stairs. In other words, move your body. When you get your blood pumping, you can’t help but have enough energy to face whatever the world throws your way. In fact, even just taking a brisk walk can improve your energy levels for up to two hours (and sugar only helps for one).
Watch Your Intake
While a candy bar isn’t the best choice, you are on the right track by wanting to consume something. However, a complex carb paired with protein is a much better option. These two components offer you a sustained source of energy that can’t be beat. Think low-fat cheese with a whole grain cracker or whole-wheat toast with peanut butter. You also want to start your day with a high-carb, high-fiber meal, like whole-wheat toast, to help avoid a mid-day energy crash in the first place.
When you are doing the same thing for hours on end, your brain reaches a point of exhaustion. You need to step away from the task at hand and let it reboot. It doesn’t even have to be a very long break. In fact, brief, but frequent, breaks are actually the most effective at fighting fatigue. Even just a few minutes every hour where you step away from you desk can prove to be surprisingly invigorating.
While it may seem counterproductive, meditating is actually a very efficient method at reigning in your energy and putting it to good use. No, this doesn’t mean you have to sit cross-legged on the floor under your desk, chanting, with candles lit all around you. What it means is that you need to regroup. Go somewhere quiet, like your car, an empty break room, or even the restroom. Once you are there, shut your eyes, take deep breaths, and picture your happy place. It only take three minutes of this meditation method to provide you with a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm.
