Before picking up that powder blue eyeshadow, consider what ingredients are in your cosmetics. Researchers in the U.S. have discovered that nearly one in eight of the over 82,000 ingredients used in beauty products are actually industrial chemicals. Even if your makeup doesn’t cause any visible effects, the harmful chemicals contained in the cosmetics can cause unseen problems in the body. Here’s a look at some of the most common toxic ingredients found in modern cosmetics.
Parabens act as artificial preservatives to prevent the growth of mold, yeast and bacteria in many skin care and cosmetic products. While parabens are added to makeup to prevent one danger, they can actually cause another. Parabens contain estrogen-mimicking properties that have been linked to an increase in breast cancer.
2. Lead Acetate
Did you know that some lipsticks contain lead? This highly toxic metal is associated with the toxicity of numerous body organs, as well as neurological issues. Lead can also play a role in the development of cancer.
3. Imidazolidinyl Urea
Found in beauty products such as eye shadow, eye liner, face powder, moisturizer, and eye cream, imidazolidinyl urea has been found to induce dermatitis, even after a short-term use. Imidazolidinyl urea is also a known formaldehyde releaser.
Speaking of formaldehyde, numerous beauty products also contain this harmful toxin, including nail polish, eye shadow, and facial cleansers. Considered a human carcinogen, formaldehyde has been scientifically linked to several occupational-related cancers, including nasopharyngeal and nasal cancers.
5. Isopropyl Alcohol
Isopropyl alcohol is a dangerous toxin commonly found in antifreeze. The ingredient is believed to be twice as toxic as ethanol, and can have damaging effects on the skin. Isopropyl alcohol can be found in nail polish, pore strips, blush, and hair dye.
6. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, is often found in foaming products. It has been known to cause a number of health issues, including irritation to the lungs, skin, and eyes. When combined with other harmful ingredients, SLS can also contribute to more serious conditions, such as respiratory and kidney damage.
Cosmetics are meant to make you appear more beautiful on the outside, but they can have the opposite effect inside the body. Be sure to carefully read the list of ingredients before purchasing cosmetics, or even better, go organic.
