Back acne – or bacne – is the dirty little secret of many, if not, all people. Back acne is a lot easier to conceal than facial acne, but with the right skincare routine you can do more than hide bacne, you can eliminate it.

1. Adjust Your Wardrobe

Don’t forget that your clothes as they share some of the blame. skin-tight workout clothes are notorious for messing with your skin. They are cute, but can be suffocating and irritable. Wear loose-fitting tops as much as possible. When it’s time to get your sweat on, stick with cotton or sweat-wicking fabric, and then change out of the sticky duds as soon as possible.

2. Ditch Pore-Clogging Products

To clear yourself of back acne, take away irritating laundry and beauty products. Switch to a scent-free laundry soap and skip the dryer sheets, which can clog pores due to the waxy residue. Avoid hair products containing lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate and avoid lotions altogether, except for sunscreen labeled non-comedogenic or oil free. Instead of lotioning up after the shower, use a daily application of an acne-fighting retinoid cream.

3. Shower for Skincare

Apply a benzoyl peroxide foam wash to the back with a gentle lotion applicator daily and every time after you exercise. Note that other shower applicators (even puff balls) can irritate the skin. Since the skin on your back is thicker than the skin on your face, let the wash sit for a couple minutes before rinsing. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends starting with a low concentration of benzoyl peroxide (around 5 percent). If you don’t see results, use a higher concentration. Two or three times a week, gently exfoliate to eliminate dead skin cells. Additionally, when you rinse the shampoo and conditioner from your hair, pull your tresses forward so the products don’t stick to your skin.

4. Visit the Spa or Salon

If all else fails, making a trip to a spa might be the trick you need. The same facials, peels and microdermabrasion treatments that clear facial acne work wonders on the back. On top of it all, majority of spas and salons offer specialized services that target back acne. You can find a nearby professional esthetician on beauty search engines like Vagaro who will evaluate your skin and recommend personalized treatments.

It’s good to remember that everyone will see improvements at different rates. Start your journey by adjusting your wardrobe and removing soaps or lotions that contain detergents that are too harsh for sensitive skin. If you’re unsure about starting oral medication to improve your skin, consult with a skincare professional for a personalized routine. When in doubt, book a professional.
