For all of February, the whole world watched PyeongChang as it hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics. It may have been freezing cold for most of the events, but that didn’t stop your favorite athletes from sporting some gold-medal-worthy looks. From skating garb to team uniforms, here were some of the best styles from the Winter Olympics.
Johnny Weir’s Sparkly Maroon Suit
When he wasn’t dazzling on the ice, beloved American skater Johnny Weir was sitting on the mic commenting on other skating performances. This is something he’s done often, but he’s never looked as good as he did in PyeongChang. His sparkly maroon pantsuit was decorated with a black collar and a long, loose black knotted bowtie. He matched his skating compatriot Tara Lipinski’s black and red sleeveless dress perfectly.
Team France’s Skiing Uniforms
France’s skiing team looked effortlessly fashionable in bulky winter coats designed by Lacoste. The all-white uniforms included the aforementioned puffer coats, which had asymmetric red zippers on the right sides. Their fitted slacks, which were not quite jeans and not quite athletic pants, were paired with all-white sneakers.
Finger Heart Gloves
If you watched extensive coverage of the Olympics, you probably saw many Koreans in PyeongChang all doing the same hand gesture. It involved them curving their index fingers around their thumbs so the tip of their index fingers were visible around the other side.
What was this gesture? Simple! Finger hearts. As the gesture became more and more popular, finger heart gloves were commonly seen on spectators and athletes alike in PyeongChang. These have red tips at the thumb and index finger so it was much easier to make the finger heart.
Team USA’s Casual Designer Opening Ceremony Uniforms
Jeans aren’t exactly commonly-worn garb at the Olympics, but they completed the uniform for Team USA at the opening ceremony. Ralph Lauren’s Polo Ralph Lauren label designed the look, which included a blue knit hat emblazoned with USA in white, a matching sweater with American stars and stripes, a puffer coat in the country’s colors, tan leather cowboy gloves with fringes (as well as Olympic logos and the American flag), large brown leather belts, jeans, and brown hiking boots. How about that for some classic Americana?
