No-Shave November has gone far beyond a once-a-year cancer awareness campaign, and beards have become a trending way for men to express themselves. However, beard hair is quite unlike head hair and requires some special care to keep it looking great. Here are the top 3 tips for maintaining a killer beard — and no, wielding a pair of razor sharp scissors close to your own face isn’t one of them.
1. Keep Your Beard Conditioned
Beard hair is usually thick and wiry, making it feel dry and coarse to the touch without proper conditioning. This is where a lot of men get confused though — should you use in-shower conditioner, beard wax, beard oil, or beard balm? Remember that wax is mostly for shaping, like hairstyling gel, and beard balm is usually thicker than beard oil and can be used for especially challenging beards. Don’t use hair products on your beard and instead ask your salon professional for a recommendation on what products to buy and how often to use them.
2. Comb Your Beard Regularly
Beards can get tangled and even though the hair is thick and coarse, the area is especially tender to pulling. A beard full of knots is no fun to deal with, so keep your beard brushed and combed on a regular basis. Use a wide tooth comb to comb completely through the beard hair and remove tangles, and use a bristle brush to tame flyaways before applying beard oil, balm, or wax. A boar’s hair bristle brush is perfect for the job.
3. Have Your Beard Trimmed by a Professional
Trims are necessary to keep your beard looking sharp, but there’s no need for you to try to DIY it. It may seem simple enough to give your beard a little snip-snip, but one wrong move can drastically change the shape of your beard and how you look. Instead, trust a professional to get the shape right and to avoid hurting yourself. You’ll be glad you did — your beard will come out sharp and stunning, and it will grow back out evenly until it’s time for your next trim.
