June 5 is Global Running Day, the worldwide celebration of running that encourages people from around the globe to get moving. At present, the event has over 8,500 participants from over 128 countries pledged to spend the day on the run (literally and figuratively!)
Running for a Cause
Running for charity is a great teambuilding practice that has the added benefits of paying your success forward, while also allowing you to promote your business. For fitness professionals, charity runs could become a vital tool, showcasing your passion for fitness, bringing your staff together to work towards a common cause that benefits an organization you’re passionate about. Create team shirts to let other runners know who you are and you’ll be a moving billboard for your business while you’re doing something that gives back, which is a win/win.
Give Back, Bigtime
By now, everyone is aware of the benefits of running. And running for charity isn’t just something that fitness professionals can do as a workplace teambuilder! Salons, spas, barbershops, massage therapists, and anyone involved in the personal care industry should consider a charity run. Taking care of people is your business, and this is just another solid way for you and your coworkers to extend your service to the community.
Not only will the charity you select get critical financial support from your business running in their name, but your team will be motivated together and benefit from running with a shared purpose. This can be even more important if the charity you choose has touched one of your teammates in a personal way. Many salons participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, because of breast cancer’s impact on beauty professionals, their families, and their clients. Whatever charity you choose, no matter your reasons for choosing it, you’ll find yourself overwhelmed by support when you cross the finish line.
Take Your Business on the Run
The best thing about Global Running Day and running for a
cause is that it’s something you can do year-round, not just on the
international day of recognition. Your business can also find an event nearby, or create a team and join virtually,
and wherever you are in the world, know that you’ll be running for a great
cause and showing your community your commitment.
And if you really want to run for a cause on short notice,
you can still pledge
to join the New York Road Runners virtual race, where your pledge supports
the NYRR mission to serve and inspire through running. Or, better yet, take the
kids out as part of the Million Kid Run.
Even if it’s been a while, “finished last” still beats “didn’t show up.” And no
one says you have to run, either! Walking for charity provides many of the same
health benefits as running. Simply getting out there and doing it counts, too!
Remember, there’s no wrong way (or wrong day!) to participate in Global Running Day when you’re running towards a better future for your community, and the world. Dust off your sneakers and get ready to pound some pavement!
Does your business run for charity? We’d love to see your
team! Tell us what charity you run for, and why you’re running. Next time you
lace up your sneakers, know that we’ll be cheering you on towards the finish
