July 29 is National Lipstick Day, so grab your favorite shade (or shop for a new one!) Lipstick is one of those deceptively simple cosmetics, prone to feathering and smearing, ruining the look of your chosen hue. Here are some helpful “lip hacks” to make sure that your lip color goes on smooth and stays true while you’re wearing it. So, for National Lipstick Day, treat your kisser to the VIP treatment, and try some of these tricks to keep your lipstick looking fresh as a daisy and vibrant as the minute you put it on.
Exfoliation isn’t just for your face and body! Your lips can benefit just as much from removing the dead skin that ruins the smooth look of your lip color and causes flaking. Remember to exfoliate lips once or twice weekly, or just before applying lip color. First, apply a light layer of lip balm first to give your lips enough slip to gently slough off flakes. Then, use a damp toothbrush or a clean, disposable mascara spoolie brush to gently brush away dead skin cells and flakes that’ll ruin a smooth coat of lip color. Or, you can use a dedicated lip scrub to exfoliate and moisturize lips in one simple step. Our top pick for lip scrubs is the LUSH cosmetics line, which comes in flavors ranging from honey and bubblegum to mint julep and cookie dough.
2. Don’t Forget the SPF
Your lips are the most delicate part of your face. The skin of your lips is softer because unlike the rest of your body, there’s no hair on your lips, leaving them vulnerable to sun and damage. Likewise, lips don’t have melanin to protect them, and lip gloss intensifies the effects of UV rays. So, after you exfoliate, before you apply any lipstick, don’t forget to apply a light layer of SPF or a lip balm with SPF protective.
3. Shape Lips to Make Color Pop
Before applying your lip liner or color, line the outer edges of your lips with concealer and blend well. This ensures that your lip color will look especially sharp, and bonus, it’ll prevent color transfer around the edges of your mouth. To make your lips look bigger, use a lip brush to apply a light layer of concealer in the center of your lips. Focus on the bow of your top lip and the center of the bottom lip beneath the bow. Dab the concealer with a clean fingertip to blend lightly, and then apply your lip color over it. You’ll be amazed at how much fuller your lips look!
4. Get a Perfect Cupid’s Bow Every Time
With a coordinating color lip liner, draw an X on the center of your upper lip. Next, use the lip liner to line and lightly fill in the rest of your lip to give your lipstick some grip power. Use a clean fingertip or a lip brush to soften the liner to give it a more natural look. That way, if it starts to wear off, it’ll fade evenly instead of fading in patches or leaving a ring of liner around faded lips.
5. Keep Color on Lips, Not Teeth!
After you’ve applied your lip color, stick a clean pointer finger in your mouth and wrap your lips around it, like you would a lollipop. Lipstick on the inner part of your lip that would have smeared on your teeth will come off on your finger instead.
