The Story of the Jack-o-Lantern
Jack-o-lanterns are a tradition brought to North America by Irish settlers, and the festive gourd’s origin comes from a folk tale. The Irish legend tells the story of Stingy Jack, who played a trick on the devil. For his deceit, Jack was doomed to wander the earth forever. Ever the mischief-maker, Jack is said to use his lantern to lure travelers away from their path. Once the Irish arrived in the Americas, they found pumpkins to be even better for carving, and the tradition stuck. Want more fun facts about Halloween? We’ve got ‘em!
