Black Friday isn’t cancelled, but it’s sure going to be a different experience in 2020. For small businesses, it’s vital to maximize your sales this season to offset the losses of the year and to make sure that 2021 starts strong. In this blog series, you’ll learn how to build on the momentum of Black Friday and extend it to Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. In this first installment of our 3-part series, we’ll explore how to compete with big retail outfits, market your tempting seasonal sales, and rack up some extra holiday cash!
What’s Different About This Year’s Shopping Season?
In 2020, Black Friday isn’t just about targeting one specific shopping day to provide exclusive savings, as it has been historically. Many stores will give the best deals on Black Friday itself, while also promoting Black Friday deals leading up to and following the specific day.
How to Make More Sales for Black Friday 2020
This year, many big retailers have opted to stay closed on Thanksgiving. For Black Friday sales, that means in-store events are less important than in previous years. Which is okay – Black Friday sales were already trending online before the pandemic, and retail researchers predict that’s a trend that’s here to stay. So, if no one’s really going out to shop, how can your small business bring in Black Friday revenue?
Start Black Friday sales on the Monday before Black Friday. You’ll make more cash on a 5-day sale than a 24-hour event.
Run different “Black Friday” sales each day leading up to Black Friday. For example, in a salon, offer a 20% discount on retail products on Monday. Then on Tuesday, offer 20% off pre-booked January appointments, Product + Service bundles on Wednesday, Gift card incentives on Thursday, and so forth.
Offer deeper discounts each day leading up to Black Friday. Not only does this allow your campaign to gain traction throughout the week, but it also increases customer engagement and encourages repeat sales. Start small so you’ve got room to grow and offer your deepest discounts and hottest sales on Friday. For example, start Monday at 10% off and work your way up to 40% and 50% “cyber doorbusters” on Friday.
Make curbside pickup and free shipping the gold standard for your Black Friday sales. If you can create extra value for your curbside pickups, like January coupon vouchers, freebies, or complimentary gift bags, this can be a powerful motivator to purchase. Free shipping is what online shoppers expect for the holiday season – but don’t worry about shipping costs cutting into your profits. Studies show online shoppers will spend more to qualify for free shipping, and to make sure they get the most “bang for their buck.”
Automate email and text marketing messages for each day leading up to Black Friday. Then, you’ll be able to focus on your in-store customer service and pulling and packing your online sales.
Post exclusive social media marketing blasts to boost hour-by-hour sales. Remember, social media posts are easily shareable between friends and family and can make more sales for your business with less effort.
