Innergize Day falls on the day after the Autumnal Equinox and is observed as an opportunity to relax and revitalize. One of the easiest ways to quiet all the extra “brain chatter” and reconnect with your inner self is meditation. If you’re ready to get “innergized,” here’s how to get started with meditation!

What Is Meditation?

Meditation is a mind/body practice that has been around since at least 5,000 BCE and is used to train your awareness and attention. Meditation is more of a skill than an activity, used to increase calmness and physical relaxation. Studies show that meditation can improve a person’s psychological balance by focusing and redirecting the interactions between the brain, mind, body, and behaviors. There are many approaches to meditation and different techniques, such as movement meditation, spiritual meditation, mantra meditation, transcendental meditation, focused meditation, and mindfulness meditation. Meditation doesn’t change you into a different person or turn off your thoughts and emotions. The practice simply refocuses your attention, to help you gain perspective.

What Are the Benefits of Meditation?

There are numerous studies that demonstrate that meditation can be used as a complementary and integrative approach to health care. Meditation isn’t a substitute for traditional health care, but it is shown to have a positive impact on conditions as varied as high blood pressure and pain management to IBS, ulcerative colitis, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Meditation has even helped smokers finally kick the habit for good!

What Do I Need to Start Meditating?

Meditation is one of the easiest skills to begin practicing, because all you really need to get started is yourself! In general, most meditative practice require just four elements:

  • A quiet place with as few distractions as possible
  • A comfortable position to practice
  • An attention focus, such as a mantra, an object, a sound, or your own breath
  • An open attitude that allows distractions to be acknowledged and then released
