What is Small Business Saturday?
Small Business Saturday is an annual celebration that encourages consumers to shop at local businesses. It takes place every Saturday after Thanksgiving, during the peak of the holiday season, between Black Friday & Cyber Monday.
The event was started in 2010 by American Express. This year it lands on Saturday, November 27. To date, Small Business Saturday has grossed $19.8 billion dollars in American spending, according to American Express.
Why is Small Business Saturday Important?
Whether in business for years or just starting out, Small Business Saturday provides the opportunity for business owners to gain exposure locally and put money back into their communities. According to statistics from fbfs.com, “For every dollar spent at a small business, 67 cents stay within your local economy.” Additionally, Small Business Saturday gives neighboring businesses the chance to partner up and support each other, keeping funds flowing within the community.
How to Support & Participate
No matter if you own a brick and mortar or an online business, there are several ways for retailers to participate in Small Business Saturday. Below are three tips on how you can get involved.
- Start in-store promotions to increase foot traffic: To attract more customers inside your business, create weekly sales with new offerings until the end of the holiday season. For example, a free cup of hot chocolate with every hair color appointment.
- Create a digital holiday marketing campaign: Small businesses can take advantage of technology; and invest in software that can create a marketing plan. From email to automated text marketing, implementing a digital holiday campaign is a great way to participate and boost business.
