Aesthetician? Esthetician? What’s the Difference?
Both estheticians and aestheticians are licensed skin specialists, and National Aesthetician’s Day honors both professions equally. While there is a lot of nuance to the differences between the two, the main difference between estheticians and aestheticians is the type of clientele they serve and the setting in which they work. Estheticians generally work in a salon, resort, fitness club, or spa esthetics setting. Estheticians mainly provide services such as facials, exfoliations, specialized skin treatments, waxing, aromatherapy, and head and neck massage. Aestheticians, like estheticians, are trained, licensed skin specialists. However, aestheticians work primarily in medical spas, and are also called clinical or paramedical aestheticians. Aestheticians generally are more clinically-focused, often servicing burn victims, cancer patients, or clients with health-related skin conditions. In addition to medical spas, aestheticians often work in burn units, hospitals, reconstructive surgery centers, trauma centers, and other healthcare facilities. It should be noted, however, that estheticians and aestheticians are both formally educated, trained, and licensed, and you may encounter either profession in any manner of business that provides specialized skin care services.
