One of the newest ways to whiten teeth makes use of two unlikely ingredients: charcoal and turmeric. One is black and the other is deep orange. So how exactly are these two substances supposed to make teeth whiter and do they even work?

What is Charcoal?

First, the kind of charcoal that is meant to be used for whitening teeth is activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is specially processed carbon that has small pores that increase the surface area. Its microporosity makes it excellent for removing toxins, primarily.

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a root bulb that is mainly used in cooking. It’s frequently found in Indian dishes, and is known to have anti-cancer effects via its main component, curcumin.

Does Activated Charcoal Whiten Teeth?

Experts say that yes, activated charcoal actually does work to whiten teeth. The way it works is that the activated charcoal alters the pH balance in your mouth, helping to support oral health. But that’s not how your teeth get whiter using activated charcoal. When you brush with toothpaste containing this black substance, the activated charcoal, with its microporous properties, removes microscopic particles and plaque that are discoloring your teeth. In other words, using activated charcoal is like powerwashing for your teeth.

Does Turmeric Whiten Teeth?

Turmeric stains almost everything it comes into contact with, including your hands. So why would anyone suggest you use it to whiten your teeth? Because it’s actually an age-old Indian secret, that’s why. In India, where turmeric is abundant, it’s quite common to clean the teeth with this orange substance. Turmeric has indeed been shown to visibly whiten teeth. In addition, turmeric’s anti-bacterial properties make it an effective agent to use for general oral hygiene, getting rid of mouth bacteria and keeping gums clean.

How to Use Activated Charcoal and Turmeric for Whitening Teeth?

There is no evidence that combining activated charcoal and turmeric has any additional benefits above simply using one or the other. So if you choose to try these, you should opt for the one you feel most comfortable with. To brush with activated charcoal, simply dip your wet toothbrush into the ground charcoal (approved for oral use), and brush as usual. To whiten with turmeric, you might find it more pleasant to mix a sprinkling of turmeric with a half teaspoon of coconut oil. Then brush as usual. With both options, rinse well and enjoy whiter teeth!

Not sure what to wear this steamy season? We’ve found some easy, breezy looks worth copying. Whether you have a hot date, beach side barbecue, or backyard soiree to plan for, you’ll be ready.

Bright, chunky stripes

The ‘90s are calling, and if you answer, you’ll see that thick, bright stripes are back in fashion. Designers like Proenza Schouler, Mulberry, and Delpozo sent out models on their respective spring/summer 2017 shows wearing stripes of all kinds. Whether it’s a sweater, skirt, blazer, or shirt, horizontal or vertical, wear those stripes proud. The louder these are, the better.

Modernized khakis

Chances are, you probably already have a pair or two of khaki shorts in your wardrobe. Designers like Carolina Herrera and Creatures of Comfort have updated khakis, using the material in dresses, jackets, and yes, pants. This summer, try wearing khakis in a new way.

Fun floral everywhere

This season, designers like Erdem, Dries Van Noten, Balenciaga, and Chloe are emphasizing all-floral looks. If this seems a bit intimidating, start slowly with a floral dress or romper. Then pair a solid top with a pair of floral shorts or vice-versa. This spring-to-summer trend is everything the season should be: bright, sunny, and fun.

Embracing yellow

Speaking of sunny, yellow is set to make an impact this summer. From Kate Spade New York to Jason Wu and Coach, the summer runways were full of models sporting this cheerful color.

You don’t have to wear a show-stopping shade of yellow, either. The option is yours. For early summer, springy pastels make for a great choice. As the season heats up, so too should your fashion choices. Embrace a canary yellow ensemble at least once, be it a skirt, top, or even a dress.

‘80s retro glam

Whether you missed the ‘80s entirely or you want to relive your glory days, summer 2017 is the season to do so. From last year to this year, the runways have been littered with throwbacks to the colorful, decadent decade.

The best part about ‘80s fashion? You can tailor it how you like, whether that’s towering heels or puffy shoulder pads.

Shirt dresses

When it gets swelteringly hot, you want to wear something roomy and comfortable. Enter the shirt dress. DKNY, Banana Republic, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Rag & Bone restarted this trend.

The most popular shirt dress color to wear is white, which is ideal for summer anyway since your clothing will absorb less heat. Pair your dress with a pair of killer wedge heels and a straw hat and you’ll be a summer fashionista.

Single-color outfits

Color-blocking may still be trendy, but designers like Max Mara and Roland Mouret have moved fashion more towards single-color getups.

This may feel too matchy-matchy at first. To combat that, try buying a single-colored romper or two-piece set that’s already one color. You can also offset your main color with leggings or a skirt in a complimentary hue. There are plenty of options.

When we think of workout trends, sleep is the last thing on our mind. A new exercise trend is changing our perceptions about what is considered a workout. If you’re an overwhelmed individual looking for a mid-day shut-eye, Napercise is the latest fitness craze for you. Started in the UK, this workout trend was targeted at exhausted parents to “reinvigorate the mind, improve moods, and even burn the odd calorie.”

How Napercise Works

Napercise is taking a nap in the middle of the day with a slight twist. Whereas we would usually nap alone, napercise is an aerobic style class that replaces bicycles for beds. The class typically lasts anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour. Soft, relaxing music is played and the attendees are encouraged to relax until they doze off.

Napercise Benefits

While the vast majority of us focus our efforts on appearing healthy on the outside, it is important to also put that same level of energy into our internal health and Napercise offers just that. Data shows that 86% of parents struggle with fatigue and 26% get less than five hours of sleep nightly. Sleep plays a significant role in our physical and emotional health. Being fully rested greatly helps with making rational decisions and strenuous roles such as parenting. Snoozing also helps with improving your memory, lowering your blood pressure, and much more.

With a world that is too focused on the exterior and not focused enough on the interior, napercise just might be what the world needs to bring about balance. Either way, don’t knock it until you try it.

Microneedling is the latest skincare trend which pricks the skin resulting in reviving collagen and elastin production. While it’s just making its way into the mainstream for home use, skincare professionals have been practicing microneedling for years. This ensures that it’s an established procedure with effective and noticeable results. In fact, microneedling is so effective for collagen renewal that another term for this procedure is collagen induction therapy.

Can Microneedling Be Done at Home?

The biggest concern over microneedling isn’t whether or not it works, but at-home users must use caution. Since the tool lightly punctures the outer layers of the skin, there is real chance of infection if not done properly. In addition, those with autoimmune conditions or diabetes are advised not to attempt  microneedling at home.

Does Microneedling Hurt?

The procedure itself is painless, although sensitive skin will find the experience less pleasant. The sensation has been described as “prickly.” Those who are afraid of needles may not enjoy the experience of microneedling.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling works by puncturing tiny holes on the surface of skin. The skin reaction to punctured skin it to increase collagen and elastin production to heal. This reaction disappears fine lines and leaves behind a fuller, plumper-looking skin. This procedure also works on skin with acne scars and sunken areas. It’s also fine for use on other areas of the body besides the face, such as the décolletage. As always, you should seek advice and consult with a professional before attempting microneedling.
